Ultra Low Temperature Bearings
Cryogenic bearings are one of the key components of cryogenic liquid pumps. Its operating conditions have the following characteristics: the bearings work in a low temperature environment, LNG generally reaches -196℃; there is no lubricant during operation, and the pumping medium is used for lubrication, and the bearing lubrication environment is quite harsh; the working conditions are complex: the conveying medium often contains impurities, is corrosive, and may contain water vapor; high reliability requirements: the downtime maintenance cost is high, and the loss caused by bearing failure is large; for the use of cryogenic bearings, in order to adapt to its requirements under low temperature conditions, the above aspects should be considered during design.
Ultra Low Temperature Bearings
LNG ultra-low temperature bearings are mainly used in cryogenic equipment such as LNG cryogenic submersible pumps. There are two main types of bearings used in cryogenic submersible pumps: deep groove ball bearings and angular contact ball bearings. This type of bearing has been serialized and produced according to international standard model sizes.

LNG ultra-low temperature bearings work in ultra-low temperature environments. There is no lubricant during operation and they are lubricated by pumped media. The bearing lubrication environment is quite harsh and requires the bearing to have a long life. The bearing ring material is G95Cr18 and G102 Cr Mo stainless steel, or imported high nitrogen stainless steel Cronidur30 (X30 CrMoN15-2) and X.D15N.W (X40 CrMoVN16-2); the rolling element material is G95Cr18 and G102 CrMo stainless steel or silicon nitride (Si3N4) or zirconium oxide (ZrO2); the cage is made of non-metallic materials with self-lubrication, wear resistance and low temperature resistance. Hybrid ceramic ball bearings made of ceramic materials have the following characteristics:
1) Strong corrosive environment (suitable for corrosive media)
2) Medium lubrication environment (such as bearings immersed in water, water as lubricant, liquid hydrogen or liquid oxygen environment, etc.)
3) No lubrication environment (dry operation)
4) Low-temperature bearings have ultra-low operating temperature
5) Completely anti-magnetic bearings, conductive or non-conductive can be achieved through different coatings.
Accuracy level
The accuracy level of low-temperature bearings is: P5, P4.
Applicable media
The low-temperature media suitable for low-temperature bearings are: LNG, CNG, LPG, LN2, LO2, LH2, LAr, liquid methane, liquid ethylene, etc.
Common problems and solutions for ultra-low temperature bearings
1. For bearings stuck at low temperatures, the external cause is the change in temperature, and the internal cause is the different thermal expansion coefficients of the shaft, frame and material. When the temperature range is large, the shrinkage rates of different materials are also different, resulting in a smaller gap and stuck. For equipment with a wide working range, including equipment used at low temperatures, it is necessary to calculate the expansion coefficient of the material, and it will be better to use materials with similar expansion coefficients as much as possible.
2. In structural design, it is necessary to avoid using a tapered bearing at each end of the shaft. In this structure, the longer the distance between the two bearings, the greater the possibility of jamming. If a stack of tapered bearings is installed at one end of the shaft, the axial movement of the shaft is constrained as the shaft is positioned, and the other end of the shaft is used with a rolling bearing to control radial force. The axial direction can move axially within a certain range with the axial temperature.
3. When using low-temperature bearings, pay attention to burns caused by poor lubrication, so pay special attention to the selection of suitable lubricants.
